SMC's research program aims to shed light on the many facets and dimensions of migration in the Philippines and in the region.

Among the researches SMC has conducted are: the impacts of migration on the family, solo-parenting, female migration, international marriages between Filipino women and foreign men, migration and entrepreneurship, evaluation of the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminars (PDOS), assessment of pre-departure information programs, Filipino migration to Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, assessment of HIV vulnerability in migration in the BIMP-EAGA region, and the return and reintegration of Filipino women migrants.
 
Recently Completed Researches

 

Unauthorized Migration in Southeast Asia

SMC coordinated a four-country study on the pheno-menon of irregular or unauthorized migration in two countries of origin, the Philippines and Indonesia, and two countries of destination, Malaysia and Thailand. The report of this study has been published into a book, Unauthorized Migration in Southeast Asia (SMC, 2003) .

Impact of Migration on Filipino Children Left behind

In cooperation with the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), in 2003 SMC undertook a survey on the impact of migration on Children left behind in the Philippines. The results have been published in the report Hearts Apart .

Filipino Migrants' Experience Prior to Deployment

Life Aspiration of Children of OFWs

In cooperation with ISMU-Milan, in 2005 SMC under-took a research on the work and life aspiration of Children of OFWs in selected communities which have significant migration to Italy. The results have been published into a book, Orgoglio e Pregiudizio, and a DVD, Chasing Rainbows .

MAPID - Migrant Associations and Philippine Institutions for Development

SMC, in partnership with the ISMU Milan and the Universidad de Valencia, is conducting a research on Filipino migrants’ associations in Italy and Spain, and a corresponding study on government institutions involved in migration and/or development issues in the Philippines.

CHAMPSEA - Impact of International Migration on the Health of Children Left behind

The Scalabrini Migration Center (SMC) is cooperating with the National University of Singapore and St. Andrew’s University (Scotland) in carrying out the Children and Migrant Parents in Southeast Asia (CHAMP-SEA) Project in the Philippines. Other participating countries are Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand.

MISA - Migration Information System in Asia

The Migration Information in Asia (MIA) Project aims to develop a similar system of migration information sharing by establishing links between the implementing agency, the Scalabrini Migration Center (SMC), and partner institutions or correspondents for continuous reporting, updating and sharing of migration information.
